"I wanted words but all I heard was nothing."
I am a 26 year old woman and my husband is mute. He hears me, but he doesn't speak. He wasn't always like this. Not when we first met, not when we first confessed our love for each other, and definitely not on our wedding day. This is our story.
"You have to stop answering back to your parents like that! What if God decided to take away your ability to speak because of your lack of respect for your parents?"
I remember saying those exact words to John. I didn't know then how much those words would come back and haunt me. John and I had a pretty ordinary relationship. Our love story isn't some extravagant fairytale, but a normal one. We met through mutual friends, found that we had chemistry and proceeded to being a couple. It didn't take us long to fall in love. We were only 17 years old.
No one really thought we'd last, but our close friends did. They could see by the way we were together. John and I made a decision early on that we were going to further our studies locally. After graduating high school, that's exactly what we did. He got his degree in Mass Communication and I got my degree in Teaching. 6 months after graduating college, we were engaged.
"I vow to love your every flaw, your every imperfection and all your bad habits. It won't be hard because there is nothing about you I can't love. Nothing." That was John's vow to me. I called it the "nothing vow". When people heard this, they never understood. It was an inside joke for just the both of us, and he stayed true to those words.
Our marriage was not a happily ever after one. We had our fights and disagreements, but it never took us long to get pass them. It was all about give and take for us. The one fight that did get me worried was a fight to remember. I was pregnant. The day I chose to tell John, was the day he got cut from work. It was all very bad timing. His ego got the best of him because instead of feeling any joy, he broke down in anger. At the time, his immediate response was to feel shame that he could no longer provide for the family.
"Everything will be fine. I'm only 3 months into the pregnancy and you will find another job by the time the baby arrives," I said, trying my best to comfort John, but he wouldn't relent. He continued pacing the floor, clearly still angry at.... I wasn't sure who he was angry at actually. His boss? Himself? Me? His worries were valid though. Life would be tougher with him unemployed. We were supporting ourselves with no help from either one of our parents. I worked as a Primary School teacher, it doesn't exactly pay much but it's what I love to do. I was silently praying that John would come around soon, and sure enough, God answered my prayer. John came to me then, put one arm around me and I could tell he had calmed down immensely. He put one hand on my belly and used the other to cup my face. Turning me to face him, I looked deep into his light brown eyes while he said nothing. This behavior of his wasn't uncanny. He did this to remind me of our "nothing vow". His eyes told me he loved me, he never had to say anything else.
"I'm going back to the office to pack up my stuff. I'll be back in time for dinner. Love you both," he stared at me and then my belly. Ten minutes later, I got a call from the hospital. The first words out of the nurses's mouth were, "I'm sorry mam, but your husband has been in a car accident. Please..." I hung up after that, got into my car and drove as fast as I could to the local hospital where they would've no doubt taken him. Everything was a blur after I arrived at the hospital. I remember talking to some doctor. I remember sleeping 90% of the time in the waiting room, not able to bring myself to go home. By the time the doctor came out with news about John, I was wide awake.
"Your husband suffered a severe head injury to the Broca's area of his brain. This would affect his speech, and there's no guarantee he will ever speak again."
I'm pretty sure the doctor had said more words, trying to comfort me and so on, but I didn't register any of them. All I could do was think back to John's voice then. That beautiful tone of voice that had become a little piece of heaven to me. The voice that sometimes sang to me and would've no doubt sang to our baby. The voice that said these words to me on my wedding day, "There is nothing about you I can't love".
Aphasia. That's the so called inability my husband has. The doctors told me that I'm lucky he still has his ability to read and write, some patients with Aphasia don't. I did not feel lucky. I felt numb.
Today, I stand by my husband's side, always doing all the talking. He just nods and shakes his head now. I hear nothing come out from his mouth. Absolutely nothing. I catch myself watching him sleep in the middle of the night, willing him to wake up and say something to me, anything, but all I hear is nothing. He no longer recites our "nothing vow" to me. I get frustrated sometimes and take my anger out on everyone around me. I know it's not his fault he no longer speaks. For all I know, God planned it this way. I think we both took the opportunity to strengthen our faith after this experience. It was necessary. There is still one moment John and I still share that the accident couldn't take away from us. The moment John puts his hand on my now 8 month pregnant belly and holds my face in his hand. When he looks deep into my eyes and says nothing. Right then is when I know he loves me. He's telling me he loves and our baby boy his beautiful eyes. Nothing more is needed.
My mother once told me that when she went to heaven, she would come back to visit me in the form of a white butterfly. That was 5 years ago. Now I'm 20 and I still look out for white butterflies wherever I go.

My job is to be there
My job right now is to just be there. There for him, there for her. Besides the fact that I'm working my butt off as a senior in high school-studying for exams and balancing my extra curricular activities, I NEED to be there.
It's not that hard. If you truly care for them, you'll do whatever you can to see them smile again. To make sure one doesn't make a life changing decision that isn't worth it. I feel for them. ALL of them. I forget my worries because they have their worries. Whether it's any of my concern or not, you can't ask me to back off and expect me to listen, take it and go. I'm not going anywhere.
Sandra lost Arnold. If he is reading this, she's begging you to say... something. Anything. Say "Hi" maybe? How she cares for you, still you don't see it. Is seeing her face really that terrible? There was eye-contact. She knows there was. Call her. Or she'll just have to result in finishing that letter and passing it to you just before you leave for another country. Is that really what you want?
I have time for you. I really do. Always :) Even if it does take me some time to get back to you, I will always answer you with an embrace you're not gonna wanna let go off.
"Nothing" will be posted soon! ;)

You're different
I am writing this as a third person...
She is so broken. I found these words on his blog, but it applies to her more. She's embarrassed. She's hurt. They all hurt her. We hurt her. Maybe putting her on a pedestal wasn't a good idea after all. Why do we all see her as fragile anyway? I've always told my friends they were strong, how come I can't tell her that? She's strong, but she's different.... In so many ways.
"I don't ever wanna feel like I did that day."
That day is today. She's feeling like crap today.
Now, you wonder what he is feeling. At the knowledge that tears were involved...he cursed. He knew he had to try not to hurt her. I bet he thought he failed. Why doesn't he realize that the way he responses to her pain makes him transparent? It shows how much he cares. His thoughts must be overtaking his mind right now. He thinks he's in the middle of more than one ruined relationship. Hers and his, hers and a friend's. But it's not his fault. He cares. He definitely cares. He's feeling like crap today too.
My goodness! You both are. You're both uniquely different. I love that about you two. Being in the middle of things has never taught me so much. Maybe it's because I'm maturing. I think all 3 of us are. We're growing up. I know the pain doubles because we're older, but the lessons learnt doubles as well. Just think about it. Or maybe, for tonight, you both should sleep on it. Just sleep on it. I'm here, ok? I love you both. Everything's possible, things can be worked out. Just believe it, have faith. Another thing I would ask you to do is PRAY. Maybe you two don't pray as often as you'd like, now is as good time as any to start, am I right? HE IS LISTENING...

Loving Life
I finally have something to blog about. I actually had a lot on my mind I wanted to say, but never thought was appropriate for my blog.
"Sam, you look really pretty today" -Nic Ian
"Woah" -Nic Phang
*The Nics in my life :]*
First and foremost, I am finally a confirmed Catholic! From the pretty white dress to the overly done-up hair. It's all done. Confirmation classes have ended. No more early Sunday mornings, besides church services of course. No more seeing my awesome church friends every Sunday besides the occasional youth meetings of Lifeteen and bump-ins at church. (I'll post pictures up soon!)
I attended my first barbecue party. I was the only girl. No, it wasn't a trap. Yes, I got teased a little. But all in all, the boys were nice and accepting of my presence. I had fun! No awkwardness, good food... What more could I ask for in a party? ;)
New friends come at the oddest moments in your life. Sometimes, you don't even know how they find their way into your heart or when exactly they start becoming important to you. I think it's the moment you share a proper conversation together. When you imagine the other person's emotions when a story is told, when an experience is shared. I'm experiencing that right now, with 2 amazing guys. 2 new friends. One I've known longer than the other, but know less about. The other a new comer to my life, but we have in common the death of a parent. It's 2 very different friendships, relationships. But I'm willing to venture into it. What's the harm? For all I know, God put them in my life for a reason. Let's just hope I don't end up ignoring other friends in the process.

Let's Run Away
Sometimes, having too much freedom may lead to temptation and running away. Tonight, I'm going out and having some fun. Forgetting that I've had some nightmares, some unwanted thoughts and some unexpected dreams.
Little temptations. I think someone might be feeling the same things I am. I hope he contacts me if he does. I'm just waiting for my phone to beep. In the meantime, I'm gonna party!! :D

In Little Ways
She talked to him again. It was nice. It was really nice. But why is it that he is the only one that can make her open up like she did? Why was the conversation so easy?
The last time the conversations were that easy, it was with Arnold. Arnold isn't on her mind though. He is. Little old him. How could he possibly be taken? No matter how many times she says she gets her way, she knows it's not true. She does NOT always get her way. Very seldom actually.
First, almost tripping at the sight of him. If only he knew she purposely raised her voice so he could hear her, and he did. He turned and looked at her, that's when she tripped. She then walked over and the conversation went on from there. How easy it was.
Sometimes, she wishes he would look at her like that again. Like he was thinking of her. She didn't care what went through his mind as long as it was about her. Selfish isn't it? He does not belong to her. He most likely never will, but she can't help herself. He gets to her in so many little ways.

He's my kung kung
This handsome couple are my grandparents. Mom's side. What a beautiful pairing, huh? I can't imagine my life without these 2 being together. Obviously I wouldn't have a life without them but I meant it in another way. My "ama" and "kung kung" had a beautiful love story of their own. The way they named my mother is also another legendary story. But that's not why I'm posting these pictures. I wanted to show you the smile on my grandfather's face. Look how handsome he is, how happy he is.
He has become my most recent worry.
At the age of 72, he still looks so young and healthy. But seeing him today, something felt a little off. The way he talked, the way he drove, the way he conversed with me...
I suppose I should just be grateful that he's around. My grandmother isn't. The amazing women in my life don't seem to stay on this earth long. First my grandmother, then my mother. I guess God wants them by his side earlier. (I wonder if I'll follow in their footsteps)
I saw kung kung today. Haven't seen him in a while. But I find out he hasn't been feeling well lately. And it just so happened he had a doctors appointment at KL Bird Park. The doctor never showed by the way. Spending those few hours with him though... It was different. It was very obviously different. So, now all I can do is pray really hard for him. I love my kung kung with all my heart. I'm gonna make more of an effort to see him more often than I have. I really should finally lessen the work load I put on myself in school. I think I can do that :/
I love you kung kung :) Remember, ama and mummy are watching over us. Both of us. Don't forget how they taught us all to love. Their love was the strongest feeling I've ever felt in my lifetime. I can still feel it, I bet you can too ;)

I need a change
I need a change of scenery. Too many things have happened. Too many bad memories. Too many unwanted thoughts. The more I know, the more I wish I was in a secluded area where no one could find me. At the same time, I want to go out and enjoy myself. I just don't want anyone looking at me like I'm some insane idiot. Cause at this moment, that's what I feel like. -Some insane idiot.
I want some things to never have happened. I want some words taken back. I can't take this feeling anymore. I don't even have a name for this feeling. Anyway, here is a preview of my new song ;)
Chorus to "Special Someone"
I don't know, something feels wrong in this picture perfect scenery
I walk alone, needing something more, someone
Could you be him
Could you be my special someone
Could you be him
Could you be the man of my dreams...
I think I'm almost done with this 'writer's block' nonsense....

Til We Meet Again
Since it's a new month, I wanna make a new month's resolution. Instead of "Til We Meet Again" to those people in my life who I cared about that chose to leave, I wanna say "Until We Meet".
I wanna meet new people. Not just anyone, but someone. Someone special. Speaking of "Someone Special", that's the title to a new song I have yet to write. I'm so lost for words nowadays and that's not normal for me. *writers block alert!* I know my someone special may come years from now. After all, I'm only 17 years and 2 months old. Somehow, saying I'm only ___ years old makes me feel older. The word "ONLY" says a lot, doesn't it? I am getting older, and I know my someone special is out there.
I know in many ways I'm still a naive teenage girl, but a friend told me I have to have hope. He said that after I said this "I never wanna have a boyfriend until I can help it. Like knowing I'll have to see myself married to a boy I'm dating just stops me from dating." I don't know what prompted me to say that, but it was said. I couldn't take it back. Oh well.
The words "Til We Meet Again" still haunt me though. Because no matter how much I pretend I couldn't care less about the former people in my life, I do care. I do wanna see them again, talk to them again, hug them again. "Them or him?" some may ask, but I'm pretty sure it's more than one.
So, until then, whenever "then" is... I say, "TILL WE MEET AGAIN" & "UNTIL WE MEET" :)
Happy new month!! :D *June is finally here*
